Q: Where did Helen like to travel?
A: I want to share just one of many stories about my mother and… FAMILY.
So…MOM’s parents and two of her older brothers were born in Italy a VERY VERY long time ago… in the village of Ortucchio, in the area of Abruzzi, right in the middle of that beautiful country named “ITALIA”. When my children were teenagers, back around 1999ish, we decided to take mom with us and visit Italy in search of “FAMILIA”. We had no names , no addresses, no phone numbers…just many, old, very old, photos. In a rental car WAY too small for the five of us, we found this tiny lakeside village of Ortucchio, complete with very few roads, and one very small town square that was empty except for one middle aged gentleman sipping his morning coffee in the shade. Mom carried with her a very large manilla folder filled with dozens of black and white, and yellow, family pictures passed down thru the ages, some supposedly taken in Ortucchio . By GOD…WE WERE GOING TO FIND SOME FAMILY IN ORTUCCIO! The gentleman was too young to recognize anyone in our collection of pictures, but someone said “look over there…there are some old ladies… they will know someone in the photos”. We introduced ourselves with our very best, yet probably unintelligible SpangIitalian words, but HEY, pictures will tell the story, RIGHT? What started as a sleepy town square on a hot summer morning ended with dozens of Ortuccians of all ages coming out of seemingly every door in the sleepy town. They were VERY happy to see… “THE AMERICANOS”. So, every Italian…of all ages…passed around dozens of pictures in search of someone that might be FAMILY. It was quite the spectacle to be sure. In one particular 8 by 10 photo, there were a group of kids playing in a street and some were posing proudly with their bicycles. One of the elderly women took a very, VERY close look at a particular boy and his bike. She uttered something like “UN MOMENTO” and then scurried away around the corner of a building at an excited pace. Not five minutes later she came back around that same corner and trailing her was a very old man riding a bike. He dismounted his bike and looked very carefully at the photo and then he points to the proud boy in the photo and then at himself and says something like “IS MIO”. It’s ME! The boy in the picture was him …some sixty or seventy years earlier. Instant Goose Bumps for my daughter and I and I’m sure many others in the now huge gathering. Another Italian recognized another face in another picture and just minutes later a middle aged man appeared who turned out to be our second cousin. We had found some of our ROOTS … SOME OF OUR FAMILY… He graciously invited us to his home for drinks and snacks and then escorted us to the joyous town “Fried Frog Festival” which started later that evening. It was the trip of a lifetime for all of us…and truly story book stuff!
