John Joseph Camp (Poppy, Gampy)
John is survived by his daughter and son in law, Jynell and Paul Petrosino, the Petrosino family, 4 grandchildren - Ava, Paulie, Vincent and Lorenzo, Joan Camp (Mimi), David, Liz, Chandler and baby Blair, Michael & Donna Szkolnik, several nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors and his beloved dog "Buddy." A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Originally from New Haven Connecticut, John's work relocated him to what he thought was heaven on earth, the Finger Lakes. Although terribly quiet in comparison, he truly loved the area's lake fishing and his new found love of gardening. Once settled into the area he also got much joy from his years of dog training in Seneca County.
John was very proud of his 37 year railroad career as a Safety and Bridge supervisor for the Northeast region, and a Facility Manager. Along with telling stories, he had many slogans, his favorite being "Communication is the key to safety and success." So consequently he communicated to us daily…be sure to carry a blanket and flashlight in your car, be careful where you park, park by a light, watch for black ice, a storm is coming, get prepared ..…
As a younger man, John loved to dance like Fred Astaire and he always had a vibrant singing voice, sounding an awful lot like Joe Cocker. He nailed both with a passion! We always told him that he was a mixed bag of goodies.
John's struggle with his health never stopped him from bringing joy and many surprises to his grandchildren. He'd plan for their weekly visits with great anticipation.
In lieu of flowers we ask that you simply lend a helping hand to someone. Pick up someone's tab, buy lunch for the car behind you, shoot the breeze with someone that you see could use a friend. Do it, Gampy' Style! Be one of God's angels on earth.
John would end his phone calls with "Call if you need to" and "Here we go!"
Elton John' song lyrics to "Empty Garden Hey Hey Johnny" carries profound meaning.
John, We've been calling, but no one answers.
No more hearing you say "Here we go!"
But John, we know in our hearts that you're joyfully dancing and singing once again.
