Mary Ellen Higgins Taney

GENEVA-Mary Ellen Taney, 84, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 25, 2025, at home with her family by her side, after a brief illness.

In honoring her wishes, her family will have a private service. Entombment will be at St. Mary's Mausoleum.

Mary Ellen was born on November 17, 1940 in Geneva, NY and was a daughter of the late Anthony J. and Sara A. (Lyons) Serrett. She graduated from Geneva High School and then furthered her education by attending the Isabella Graham Hart School of Practical Nursing in Rochester, NY,, where she obtained her Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) degree. Mary Ellen then worked as an LPN at Geneva General Hospital and Taylor Brown Memorial Hospital, where she worked in the pediatric and long term care units, respectively. Mary Ellen also worked in private duty/home care, and at Lochland School, where she retired.

She is survived by her son Robert Joseph (Lyndsey) Higgins, III; daughters Tiffany (Peter) Bonacci and Tanya Higgins; brother Carmen Serrett; sister Ann Salone; her favorite grandson Matthew Catucci; step-children; nieces, nephews and many cousins.

Mary Ellen is predeceased by her husbands Robert Joseph Higgins, Jr and Alfred C. Taney; brother Anthony J. Serrett, Jr. and brother-in-law Rodney Salone.

Mary Ellen will be remembered for her loving spirit, sense of humor and sound advice. She was a wonderful mother and Nonna, and will be missed dearly.
