Catherine was the daughter of Sicilian immigrants, Francesco and Carmela Bertino and the last surviving member of her siblings: Mary (Mamie), Rose, Joseph, Josephine, and Frances. They grew up on Wadsworth St. in Geneva. Catherine was an excellent student, worked on her father's farm on Munson Avenue as a young girl, and worked at Azzarello's Grocery Store from age 16 to the day before graduating DeSales High School. On the day after graduation, she began work on the switchboard at NYS Gas and Electric. She met Al Liberio sometime after he returned from WWII serving as a Marine. They dated for a proper time and were married on August 26, 1950 at St. Francis DeSales Church. Catherine and Al had 7 children: Al (Elaine) Liberio of Palmyra, NY, Mary Ann (David) Stasko of Schoharie, NY, Mark (Vicki) Liberio of Plano, Texas, Tom (Linda Pitarys) Liberio of Kettering, Ohio, Laura Liberio of Geneva, Lisa (Frank) Sindoni Liberio of The Villages, Florida and Karen (Conrad) Struzik of Waterloo, NY. Her dear husband Al lived to be 94 years old and went to Heaven in 2016. She greatly loved all her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Their photos decorated her home.
After being a devoted wife and mother at home for over two decades, Catherine went back to work in the 1970's at J.W. Smiths clothing store on the switchboard. Soon after, she was hired as the Administrative Assistant to the Director and the Instructors at the Marion S. Whelan School Of Nursing at Geneva General Hospital. She worked there many years and was valuable to the whole staff and school.
In her retirement Catherine continued to be active and curious about new technologies and current events. She would happily discuss topics from old memories to the daily happenings here and wherever her children lived and worked. She was an inspiration to her children and grandchildren to always strive for an active mind.
Catherine had many, many friends throughout her life and was greatly treasured by them all. Her family loved her immensely and cared for her as she grew older. At present, we count 18 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Many people who grew up in Geneva got to know her and became great friends throughout her 99 years. She was a very devoted Catholic who prayed to Jesus everyday of her life for her whole family. She was a beautiful and greatly respected, honorable woman, loved by all. Her memory will live on for generations.
