CANANDAIGUA- Newton James Backus, 50, passed away on Wed. (Jan. 31, 2024), at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wed. (Feb. 14), in Oaklawn Cemetery, Phelps.
Newton was born on Aug. 19, 1973, in Geneva, NY and was a son of the late Donald and Cynthia (Henson) Backus. He was a 1991 graduate of Midlakes High School where he was active in the library club, and a member of the American Field Service. Newton was a kind soul always happy to help anyone in need. He enjoyed music, and a good card game. He was a lifelong fan of professional wrestling WWF/WWE, and always supported The Yankees and SU. He held various jobs locally, but most enjoyed his time employed traveling with the carnival. He will be lovingly remembered by family and friends for his kindness, sense of humor, and infectious Backus laugh.
He is survived by Survived by one son Donovan Backus; a grandson; Sister Tina Spratley; 2 nieces Jessica Raskind and Sweetie Witt; 2 nephews Joshua Spratley and Joseph Spratley and several cousins.
