Obituary of Allan M. Russell

Dr. Allan Melvin Russell Dr. Allan Melvin Russell, professor emeritus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, died peacefully at his Romulus home on February 26. He was 81. In honoring his wishes, there will be no prior calling hours. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday (March 7) at Trinity Church, 520 S. Main St. Geneva. Professor Russell was a graduate of Choate School (1947) Brown University (ScB, ScM 1951) and Syracuse University (PhD), he taught physics at Syracuse University, University of California/Riverside, and was an Associate Provost and a science professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges from 1967 until 2000. He was a visiting professor at the University of Wurzburg, Germany and at SUNY Stonybrook, and assisted in the establishment of University of Northern California, a graduate research institute in biomedical engineering. In the 1970s he worked with Gerard K. O'Neill on the NASA space colonization project, a plan to build human settlements in outer space. He co-authored Metaphoric Process; The Creation of Scientific and Religious Understanding, and was co-editor of Space Colonization: Technology and the Liberal Arts. He also wrote and delivered numerous articles and papers on diverse subjects such as statistical measurement, and the philosophical concept of human origin and destiny. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marjorie Servis Russell, two sisters (Anne Randall, Amy Richmond), five children (Clifford Russell, Kathryn Russell Hayden, Andrew Russell, Julia Russell Eells and Susan Russell), twelve grandchildren and one great grandson.
