I have many great memories of Doug and almost all of them involved laughter of some kind. Doug was a great mentor during my first athletic training job in 1983 and a friend thereafter who would take my call or engage me in conversation at the EATA or NATA despite long absences like he just had seen me the week before. I cherish those memories and my long friendship with Doug! Rest in peace buddy and my thoughts and prayers go out to your family and friends for the great loss all of us feel. Jerry

I just learned the news. I am shocked and saddened but reading the news also brought back many fond memories of Doug. When you were a freshman football player he would treat you pretty rough but once you proved your worth and came back for year two he definitely became a friend. I happened to spend some extra time in rehab one year and really got to know Doug. He took care of us like we were family. He will surely be missed.
All the best,

Luckily my relationship with Doug lasted well after school and I have been honored to have him as a friend.. God bless Shelley and your girls..

I was a member of several William Smith field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse teams in the early 1980's and felt that intimidation factor when first walking into the trainer's room, but Doug always took good care of me! He will be well remembered by the Martin family as he cared for my brothers as Hobart lacrosse players, as well. Sincere thanks to Doug and best wishes to the Reeland family from the Martin clan.

Thank you Doug for helping me through multiple season and encouraging me and the William Smith teams. Doug was also instrumental among the entire Martin crew as he also tended to my brothers on the Hobart lacrosse field in the early 80's. Doug will be reminded fondly by the entire Martin family and we send our thoughts and wishes to all the Reeland family.

I played football at Hobart and graduated in '89. All those years, Doug was key to all of us - taping those knee braces, busting our chops and most importantly after blowing out my knee at Hofstra - 8 hour bus trip home, Doug was there - drove me to Rochester to get my knee operated on, waited, drove me back and put me immediately on those Cybex machines. A great man. The stories are many. He will truly be missed and a great part of our "growing up" at Hobart.

My condolences to Shelly, the girls & those who were close to Doug.
I was an athletic training intern under Doug during the 1992-93 season. I had stumbled in my studies at Brockport & needed a place to complete my internship hours so I could sit for the NATA exam. Doug was kind enough to take me under his wing.
At first, I was not sure Doug liked me very much, but he showed me HIS way of practicing athletic training & we soon became friends & eventually, colleagues.
Over the years since I left Hobart,& passed My NATA exam,& got a job at SUNY Geneseo, our paths crossed often, but as we both had teams to take care of,we never had much of a chance to talk.
When I heard that he was very ill, whenever I was in Geneva, I would stop in to see him, but we never connected.
This past Winter, Doug traveled to Geneseo with William Smith Basketball & he made an effort to come to the Workout Center to look me up. I walked with him up to the gym & we had a chance to catch up.
It would be the last time that I would see him.
If it had not been for Doug, I would not be in the position in athletics, that I enjoy today.
Thank you Doug & Godspeed!

I'm not quite sure where to begin. Doug was one great individual. I was so fortunate to have known Doug and throughout my athletic career at Hobart, I can say he was a very good friend. He and I got to spend a lot of quality time together after lacrosse games and practices.
I have to say one of my fondest memories is a photograph of Doug icing my back down after a game. Not to my knowledge, Doug had put his tin of snuff on my bare derriere as one of my teammates snapped off a picture. I still have the photo, which I occasionally come across and it immediately
brings back some great memories. I will cherish it forever.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all his family and friends. May Doug rest in peace.

Dooger helped me through a rough senior season and we spent a lot of time together and I appreciated his humor, care and professionalism. He was perfect for HWS and was always thought of as part of the team. She transferred and is working in the field today. She mentions Doug with great fondness and wishes to be remembered to his family. Great man.

They don't come any better. I cherish the times I caught up with Doug at lacrosse reunions or at games when he would always greet me with a hearftfelt "Klink" (a nickname he gave me back in 1980 and a reference to Colonel Klink from Hogan's Heroes.) He seemed ageless over the years and I think that's because his enthusiasm and general affection for his former charges never waned. I have many fond memories of Doug including a cook-out at his home, being "level-set" during meeting when we weren't meeting Doug's expectations but my favorite was a surprise visit to Doug's home NewYear's Day Night in 1988 to watch Oklahoma in some bowl (the Orange Bowl?). In ture fashion, Doug yelled at us (John Anzalone and me) to keep the case of beer we had brough in the car and then proceeded to treat us to a memorable evening. I'll never forget coming in as a freshman, how tough and intimidating Dooger seemed. However, once you became a "regular" in there (mine via ankle sprains and subsequent tapings), you could see how he genuinely cared and gave his all to every single athlete who needed his help. He got us back on the court or field ASAP safely, but never too soon.
Dooger also taught us the difference between pain and injury -- "Piss on it!" Thanks and RIP Dooger !

From birth, we were born in the same hospital, 5 months apart. Grew-up together, with George, Mike, Tom, and a bunch of others. Even our fathers grew up together. Did things we could never tell our parents about. We were 425 lbs of running backs for BCS and an Alle-Catt Title; Section 5 runners up in basketball, both school record holders, and 1st place winners for Section 5 in our Track & Field events. We stayed close through college, he was in my wedding and I got to wear a powder blue, ruffled shirt, bell bottom tux at his wedding. The food was good! After that our careers took us in different directions, the only time I would see him was an occasional west coast RV trip, Trainer Seminar, or Hobart sports trip. You are never prepared for this kind of news because it brings into focus your own mortality. You always think you have more time. I feel comforted knowing that Doug was a good man, husband, father, and a great friend. Thanks for your friendship!

It was an honor and a priviledge to have known and worked with Doug, if even in a small capacity. In some ways, I think that Doug guided my decision to become a physical therapist. When I was 10 I had sprained my ankle, and as my dad taught at the colleges, he took me over to the training room where Doug evaluated me. Doug treated me for a couple weeks in the training room, and before long I was back playing lacrosse. I was fascinated by the training room environment and thought that this might be a good profession. Over the years Doug and I had many conversations about rehabilitation, and I always took something from our talks that has helped shape my own career. Doug had a passion for athletic training and an honest devotion to his athletes. He will be surely missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
