Obituary of George Michael Abraham Morwood

George Michael Abraham Morwood GENEVA- George Michael Abraham Morwood, 93, an American hero in World War II and the Korean Conflict who was an even bigger hero to his family, died of heart failure on Sunday at Geneva General Hospital after a brief illness. His grandson, Gregory Patrick, was at his bedside. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wed. (Aug. 28), at the Palmisano-Mull Funeral Home LLC 28 Genesee St. Geneva. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Trisagion Prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m. An Orthodox funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thurs. (Aug. 29), at St. Michael's Orthodox Church in Geneva, with the V. Rev. Fr. Gregory Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in the Little Church Cemetery in Stanley, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Michael's Orthodox Church 98 Genesee St. Geneva, NY 14456. George was born on Feb. 23, 1920, at his home, in Winooski, VT, son of the late Michael Abraham and Zahia Elizabeth (George) Morwood. He graduated from Winooski High School and went on to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Vermont. George married the love of his life, Emily Elizabeth (Khoury) Morwood, on Feb. 24, 1946, at the Church of Messiah in Glens Falls, NY. Brave and fearless, he was a highly decorated war hero in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. Among his many medals and citations was a Silver Star in the Army Air Force in World War II as a B17 ball turret gunner, an assignment he volunteered for. George earned another Silver Star and two Purple Hearts in the Korean Conflict as a forward observer for the Army. After working at General Electric Company in Hudson Falls, NY, he moved to Fort Worth, TX, to direct manufacturing for famed golfer Ben Hogan at the Ben Hogan Golf Company. In retirement, George worked in property management at One Franklin Square and with the cattle at Elmwood Farms, owned and operated by his daughter and son-in-law, David and Linda Patrick. George greatly enjoyed inventing ways of making jobs more efficient. With a manual, he could do anything. The rest just took a little longer. His inventions included an Expandable Slip Joint Nut, a Shedeyah Pasta Cutter, a Mailbox Flagger and, just this summer, a Do-It-Yourself Air Compressor. An unselfish servant of others and a faithful servant of God, his greatest love was for his family. George was an active member of St. Michael's Orthodox Church and belonged to the church's Order of St. Ignatius, the Chancel Guild and the Buildings and Grounds Committee. He also belonged to the American Legion, the Korean War Veterans and the Masons Warrensburgh (NY) Lodge # 425. He is survived by his wife, Emily 'Moonie' Morwood of Geneva; daughters, Linda (David) Patrick of Geneva; Kathryn ( John Yongyut) Sianan of Arlington, TX; son, George Michael (Ann) Morwood of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, David Micahel (Rebecca) Patrick, Gregory (Veronica) Patrick, Michael Sianan, Marcus Sianan, Rhett (Erica) Miller, Ross (Kara) Miller and Christi (Mark) Dammert; great-grandchildren, Ella Miller, Caleb Miller, Presley Miller, Maxwell Miller, Soleil Miller, Celeste Dammert and Danny George Dammert; several nieces, nephews and cousins. His St. Michael's Orthodox Church family was very dear to him. George was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters-in-law, Nicholas A. and Alice Morwood, James and Genevieve Morwood and Abraham Morwood.
