Jim was always "Buji" to me. He was my neighbor, coworker, and one of my best friends back in the early 80's. We partied heavily in those magical times in the Castro, before AIDS. As California newcomers we were awed by the beaches and redwoods, and he drove me around on his motorcycle to explore nature in the sunshine. He loved sunbathing, the gym, and the exciting new world of MTV.
Though it's been 30 years since he left town, I've always felt connected. He's been supportive of my struggles and joys in parenthood, and has visited a few times, mostly on his way to Asia with Ken. We had always planned to take the kids to visit his home on the lake, but sadly were never able to make the trip.
My heart goes out to his sisters, Patty and Barbara, and his beloved nieces and nephews. He was a gem of a human being, impish at times, but with a giant heart. I'll miss him so much.
